If you're feeling bored...
Saturday 19th April
Left home around quarter to ten, which would have been a reasonably good start had the Husband not (a) driven down the turning to his work, thus taking us in the wrong direction, and then (b) driven straight past the two turns that would have taken us back in the right direction. Add this to an apparent pathological refusal to just stop and turn around, and we had something of a long detour to get back on the right road...
Fairly miserable weather (ie driving rain) for most of the way up, and a sad lack of car-porn (tally one TVR, that was about it) but we made good time and got to York at about quarter to six. This meant enough time to stock up on alcohol and pork products in Tesco before finding the house in time to watch Doctor Who - result.
It's not a bad sized house, warm, fairly tastefully decorated (if with the touch of northern-landlady-itis that leads to no less than 3 no smoking signs downstairs alone). There is a picture at the top of the stairs of an Edwardian (?) lady identified in the visitors' book as Sophia Hughes Williams - as this is Sophia's Cottage, presumably she lived here. She looks like she might well have worked for Torchwood...(I will not be remotely surprised if I see her standing behind me in a mirror at some point).
Eventually worked out how to use the oven without blowing us up (turned out to be a gas oven with an electric grill element - who knew) and we had an evening of pizza and Britain's Got Talent. Fairly sure I spotted a Tick...
Sunday 20th April
Now, for at least three years I've taken a cafetiere on holiday with us, and have never needed it. So this year, despite putting it on my list of things to pack I thought - nah, bound to be one. Hah. Anyway, there was a ceramic coffee pot on top of one of the cupboards, so that got pressed into service with the help of a tea strainer, and very well it works too, if you remember not to swallow the bit at the bottom...
Raining again today, but we walked into town nonetheless to have a mooch about.Dragged showed The Husband all round the city centre, the King's Manor (where I did my degree), the Abbey ruins, the Merchant Adventurers Hall, the Shambles. Stopped for lunch in the Greenhouse Cafe - had giant yorkshire pudding with onion gravy and sausages (and a tasteless watery pile of mash, but I ignored that).
Refuelled, it was off to the National Railway Musuem, which we were pleased to find is free to get in now - fairly sure it was quite expensive last time I went. It has also acquired a bloody great wheel in the form of the Yorkshire Eye, but we're going to save that for a day when there's better visibility.
In the evening we went out to meet up with an old uni friend of mine and had cocktails in Henry J Bean's. Had a Mexican Passion (passion fruit liqueur and tequila), a Zombie, (rum, rum, apricot brandy and, er, rum - oh, and pineapple) and a Hazy Blue Lagoon (blue curacao, vodka and lemonade). We ate in there as well, as we had a corner with decent leather sofas - I had a steak wrap and fries, and the others had Philly steak sandwiches (which G. wanted to try entirely because they'd been mentioned in Supernatural - did I mention all my friends were also geeks? *g*)
Monday 21st April
Better weather today, so after a fry up we went back into town for a bit of shopping and so C. could take some picures. I bought Carnivale on dvd (G's recommendation from the previous night), a bath bombe from Lush ('Think Pink' *g*) and some champagne truffles from Hotel Chocolat. We walked round the city walls from Bootham Bar to Monkgate, and then back up through town - had ice creams from a shop on Stonegate (C. had toffee & fudge and I had black cherry) then had tea and cake in Brown's tearooms. I had a strawberry tart, filled with fresh cream and covered in strawberry syrup and C. had a chocolate covered crispy cake. Walked round a bit more of the walls - the section up to Micklegate is closed for repairs, but we walked from Micklegate round to Skeldergate, which is just round the corner from where we're staying, handily!
Watched a couple of episodes of Carnivale, then went to get an Indian takeaway (Lamb Bhuna since you ask) and collapsed in front of the telly (Taggart and HIGNFY).
Tuesday 22nd April
Made sausage sandwiches for breakfast, then we walked up to have a gander at the university campus. Pointed out the hotel/guest house where I used to work on the way - gave me cold shivers just walking past...
The university has expanded a lot since I was there - a lot of big new buildings and some have been demolished, although my college was just the same. Bought rolls for lunch in Heslington Village (spicy sausage and onion mmmmn) then had a pint in a pub I'm not convinced I ever actually went into while I was a student there, despite it being just round the corner.
Went on the Yorkshire Eye in the afternoon - fantastic views of York and great fun (if you're not scared of heights - it also rocks quite a bit. The Husband was gripping the seat quite firmly *sniggers*). The pods are quite small, but you don't have to share them (unless it's busy, which it wasn't, so we had one to ourselves). There was also a VIP one which had smoked glass so you couldn't see in. Which reminds me of a fic I said I'd write at some point...
Went back into town afterwards, to have yet more ice cream (coffee, and C. had orange sorbet), then C. bought me the third season of Dukes of Hazzard (which I'd been eyeing up when I bought Carnivale), yay. Had fish and chips for dinner, very nice, the local shop was voted the best in town apparently.
Wednesday 23rd April
Today we went to Harrogate and had cream teas in Betty's Tea Rooms (yes I know there's one in York, shut up). Timed it quite well - only had to queue for about five minutes, the rest of the time we were there, the queue was much longer. Had proper leaf tea with a strainer, and the scones came on silver tiered cakestands. Also there was a powder blue Bentley to gawp at, parked outside our window seat, with Isle of Man plates (we saw three Bentleys in two days, people here obv. have too much money heh).
Walked round Harrogate centre for a bit, then drove out round the Dales - Ripon, Masham, Middleham, Thirsk, and back to York (through the centre at rush hour which was a bit of a bad move - well, more of a bad not-move really).
Went to the Golden Lion pub this evening, and met up with more friends that I haven't seen for about six years. May possibly have drunk quite a bit...there was also a point at the bar when the barman, talking to some other customers, said he didn't like cats, at which point the other barman, the two other customers and me all told him quite pointedly how wrong he was. The lady customer ended up showing me a picture of hers on her phone, which meant when I sat back down and was quizzed, I got to say she'd showed me a picture of her pussy. Easily amused, me...
Thursday 24th April
Raining hard again this morning, so spent it sleeping off last night's beer on the sofa, and went out in the afternoon once it had brightened up. Drove out to Whitby, across the North York Moors and by the time we arrived it was warm and sunny. Had chips from the Magpie Cafe (as recommended by one AA Gill) and ate them on the pier, eyed up by a row of shifty looking seagulls. Walked up to the end of the pier and saw donkeys on the beach below. Had forgotten the fact that Whitby was full of Goths - everywhere we went it was all straps and lace and top hats! Had ice creams - mint choc chip (me), and peach & mango (C.) then walked up through the old town and up the 199 steps to the Abbey (and yes, I did count them).
Chinese takeaway this evening, just to feel that we'd worked our way through all the locally available options...
Friday 25th April
Had breakfast at the cafe round the corner (called 'Chubbies', LOL). Asked her to hold the mushrooms and she gave me an extra tomato instead. This would have been a good thing, had it not been a tinned tomato. I'd forgotten the propensity for serving tinned tomatoes with breakfast up here...
Bought a couple of cakes in the bakery and went back to the house - bit of a rest day today, as we're driving home tomorrow. Went out for a bit of a last minute shop, and then off to the pub to meet up with some friends I used to work with. We were going to have a curry afterwards, but they couldn't ft us in till ten, bah. So we had pasta instead, then went to another pub. Then I had chips from the kebab van afterwards...feeling quite full now...
Saturday 26th April
Drove back to Cornwall, in the sunniest, hottest weather we've seen all week *headdesk*
