Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, a review late by several years
Now, I'm a huge fan of the tv series version of Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy. I'd not exactly been avoiding the film version, I'd just never gone out my way to see it. But there it was, on the telly, and there I was, bottle of wine and pistachio nuts to hand so - why not.
And it was a lot, lot better than I was expecting, I was really pleasantly surprised.
The book, both the voice (yay Stephen!) and the graphics were great; the fact that they had the 'proper' music made me grin insanely; and seeing the original Marvin in the queue scene made me cheer out loud. As did the fact he's randomly in the side of a later shot, as if he's snuck in to say Look! Look! This is what I should look like dammit!
Small niggles - Arthur wasn't quite indignant enough, Marvin wasn't quite depressed enough. Trillian I spent most of the film trying to work out where I'd seen her before, only to realise she just reminded me of Annie from Life on Mars.
Ford was - okay. Not as good as he could have been I think, but I'm willing to concede that was mostly becasue he's not David Dixon, which is admittedly not Mos Def's fault. He was delightfully gay for Arthur though, which made me happy LOL.
Zaphod though, was brilliant. Perfect. Although I'd have liked to see them do the two-head thing properly, with the effects they've got now.
Oh, and Bill Nighy as Slartibartfast? Genius!
I actually liked the bits that were bugger all to do with the book, possibly because I wasn't mentally comparing it to the series then. Some new bits I really, really liked, like Arthur's first meeting with Ford, the fact that it was Zaphod who'd accidentally authorised the demolition of Earth, the cut back to the pub to show them all lying down with bags over their heads...
And the Vogon constructor fleet was awesome!
